The father of basketball, Dr. James Naismith came up with the game in 1892 and the first game was played in Beaver Falls Pennsylvania on April 8 1893 between the New Brighton YMCA and the Geneva College.
The game was very popular and by 1914 as many as 360 colleges boasted basketball teams. In 1939, the first NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship tournament was held which was won by the University of Oregon.

The formation of Pro basketball in 1896 came about from a dispute between YMCA team members and officials and ended in the members forming a professional team that played for money. In 1898, the NBL (National Basketball League) was formed and produced the first basketball stars – Ed Wachter and Barney Sedran.

The first two professional basketball teams to achieve success were the Buffalo Germans and the Celtics but during the 1930’s favorites included the New York Renaissance and the Harlem Globetrotters. During this time, womens basketball was also popular and produced great players such as Babe Didrikson and Alline Banks Sprouse.

In 1940, the first college basketball game was shown on TV. This game was played between Pittsburgh and Fordham at Madison Square Garden, and catapulted basketball into a national sensation. Although there are many ranking systems on many websites for NCAA basketball, the two which are most respected are the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. Different people will have their favorites according to which they believe is the best indication of a team’s current form. The NCAA basketball rankings are very important and provide rankings on a weekly basis throughout the season.

The USA Today Coaches Poll panel is made up of 31 head coaches from Division 1 organizations. All of these coaches are members of the NABC (The National Association of Basketball Coaches). USA Today became involved with the ranking system in 1993 when they joined forces with CNN to take over the rankings for UPI. ESPN joined as another sponsor of the NCAA basketball rankings in 2002. The Coaches Poll originally covered only the top 20 college teams and this was the case from its inception in 1950 right up until 1990. Only then did it change to include the top 25 teams. It has continued to cover 25 ever since.

The second of the NCAA basketball rankings published is probably slightly more highly regarded, although, as I say, this is a matter of opinion. This is Associated Press poll which is also a weekly ranking system of the top 25 Division 1 teams. These rankings are put together by a panel of sports writers from the length and breadth of the nation. The system works on the principle of awarding points to each team. The writers will decide which team they believe deserves the most points and award them a maximum vote of 25. The team which in their opinion is second, will be awarded 24 points. This continues down until the team which impressed them the least receives 1 point. Each of the writers will award the 25 teams points in the same manner and the team with the highest number of points will be ranked number 1.

NCAA basketball rankings by the Associated Press have been compiled since 1948 and cover both the men’s and women’s top 25 teams of division 1. This poll is published every Monday and the ballots are made public. Although the Associated Press poll is highly regarded and watched intensely each week, it has very little bearing on play. The teams invited to play at March Madness, the NCAA basketball tournament, will usually include all the top 25 teams as a matter of course.

There are times when these two ranking systems do not agree on the number one team. Sometimes there is a difference of opinion between the two polls and this has led to national titles being split between two different college teams. When it comes to asking a potential employee about organizations and activities that they belong to, an employer should ask, “Please list job-related clubs, professional societies, clubs, or other associations to which you belong. You may omit those which indicate your color, religious creed, race, age, national origin, sex, or ancestry”. That is a nice one, because although he was always known for wearing number 5, he actually went out in the number 9 uniform for that first season.

There is some lovely general historical baseball trivia too. Some of this is based around records which have been made and, probably, broken many times since. For example, the first 500 home run club members. The majority of people would know that Babe Ruth started the club with his 500th home run in 1929, but who were the next to join the club?

There are many websites which now give some wonderful trivia questions and answers. These are great if you are planning on having a baseball trivia quiz. You can have a lot of fun by having friends round for the evening and organizing a night of questions. If everyone came with some questions already prepared, you could take it in turns. You could raise money for charity and have a great time as well as finding out some really interesting facts, which you will probably instantly forget! Over-stimulation

Too many loud noises or too much visual stimulation can make his poor little brain reel.

Sights and Sounds

Your baby loves the sound of your voice, and some studies even indicate that he recognizes your voice at birth! Try to use a calm, reassuring tone with him. Avoid abrupt, loud noises. Sing to him. Even if you don’t have the pipes for American Idol, your baby will love it.

There are toys on the market that are designed for infant visual stimulation. Several years ago, researchers found that infants had a far easier time discerning black, white and red colors. Now, there are mobiles and playmates in these colors that can help baby with his visual development.

Mirrors are also great for visual stimulation. Non-breakable crib mirrors are available, and some even have soothing music and blinking lights.

Touch

Some babies like to be touched more than others. Let your baby stretch out on a blanket on the floor. Strip his clothes off him and let him get some air. Some gentle infant massage can help stress relief, too. Again, avoid over-stimulation. Passing him around from one cousin to another all evening can cause him to overload.

There are lots of toys on the market that promote sensory development for infants through touch. Soft toys with varying surfaces can be held, stroked and chewed on.

But try sifting through some other substances: cornmeal, oatmeal, pasta, gravel. Get out the Tupperware containers and let them mold, pour and shape.

What is it?

Take turns blindfolding each other and handing the blindfolded person an object to smell, taste, or touch. He has to identify it without peeking! This game can be played for hours, and hours…and hours on a rainy day.

Where are we?

Another fun game to play with little kids. Blindfold them, then pick them up and sit them down on a different surface. Hmmmm….scratchy, sweet, grassy. Must be in the backyard. Cold, smooth, hard surface. The tile in the bathroom? The carpet in Mom’s bedroom definitely smells different that the carpet in teenage brother’s room!

Help your child make the most of exploring the world around him. As you encourage active play and exploration, he’ll be developing sensory skills.

Growth charts are tools your pediatrician can use to keep track of your child’s physical growth. During each checkup, the doctor will measure your baby’s length, weight, and head circumference. The doctor can then compare the measurements for your baby to a chart of national averages for infants of the same age and sex.

The result is that the doctor will be able to tell you what percentile your baby is in when compared to average baby growth around the nation. For example, if your doctor tells you your 4-month-old is in the 86th percentile for weight, that means 86 percent of the two-month-olds in your country weigh less, and that 14 percent weigh more. A baby that is at the 50th percentile in either height or weight is right at the national average.

Typically, parents seem to worry quite a bit about these percentages, and that worrying is usually needlessly blown out of proportion. There are many factors that come into play when determining where your baby’s statistics will fall in the percentile chart.

It is very important to remember that no two babies are the same and that every child, due to body chemistry, heredity, diet, and many other factors will grow at their own pace.

Some babies will have growth spurts right from the start and others will take a bit longer to begin major growth periods. These measurements, charts, and percentile points are merely guides for a doctor to help in assessing your baby’s growth.

In addition to the measurements that your pediatrician will take during regularly scheduled doctor visits, you may also want to track your baby’s growth at home.

Keep in mind that the measurements you take at home may or may not be as accurate as the measurements your doctor takes, but they can provide a certain degree of insight into the growth of your baby and many new parents have found it to be a fascinating way to participate in the parenting process.

Here are some tips that can help you, as inquisitive parents, track your baby’s growth at home using commercially available scales and other measuring devices.

If baby is too small to stand upright on the scale, you can try using this procedure:

· With your baby in your arms, step onto a standard bathroom scale.

· Make note of the weight displayed on the scale and write it down on a piece of paper.

· Put your baby down and step onto the scale alone this time.

· Make note of the weight displayed and subtract this number from the combined weight of you and your baby. The resulting number is your baby’s weight.

To measure your baby’s length all you need to do is lay her down on a flat surface (her changing table is a great place for this task) and stretch a measuring tape from head to toes.

For the measuring of head circumference all you need to do is wrap the measuring tape around your baby’s head. You should wrap the measuring tape just above your baby’s eyebrows, so the tape falls right at the top of the ears. What you are trying to measure is the point around his head that has the largest circumference.

When taking your baby to the doctor your pediatrician will perform more accurate measurements. Pediatricians do the “baby measuring thing” on a daily basis and will be able to achieve a much more accurate result than you will at home. This is due to the fact that they are accustomed to the things babies do that can result in an inaccurate measurement and they have very accurate measuring tools made specifically for the purpose of measuring the characteristics of babies, such as proper baby scales equipped with cradles.

Your doctor will most likely take measurements several times during one visit and average the results together to ensure accuracy and to compensate for any discrepancies that may arise. It is crucial for the doctor’s measurements to be as accurate as possible because a discrepancy of as little as a few millimeters in length or a few grams in weight can make a difference where your baby falls on the charts.

Since the results of these measurements may determine changes to your baby’s diet, and other possible changes to how your baby is fed and treated during her first year, it is important that these results are as accurate as possible.

Your pediatrician will measure the following characteristics of your baby:

Weight:

After calibrating the scale the doctor or nurse will place your completely naked baby on a baby scale. There are electronic and traditional beam-type versions of the baby scale, but most will typically have the same type of baby holding stainless steel cradle. After your child is able to stand on her own, your pediatrician will most likely use a standard upright scale.

Length:

Like weighing, until your baby is able to stand up on his own, your doctor will perform the height/length measurements with your baby lying down. Your doctor may use a tape measure, much like you use at home, or may utilize a special “baby-measuring device”, which consists of a headboard and movable footboard to obtain the most accurate results possible.

Head circumference: This measurement will be taken in almost the same way you did at home. The doctor will take the measurement at the point where the head is at its largest circumference, right above the ears and around to the back of the head where the neck meets the cranium. Usually the pediatrician will record this measurement to the nearest 0.3 cm (1/8th of an inch).

The head is different from other parts of the body in that the brain is not fully formed at the time of birth and therefore the head will continue to grow during baby’s first year.

Baby’s head is a particular point of concern for the doctor because a head that is growing too rapidly can be a sign of hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and a head that is growing too slowly can be indicative of nutritional or developmental problems. Regardless, you shouldn’t be too concerned if your baby’s head appears a bit disproportional compared to the rest of her body, as this is completely normal for the first year of life.
