Former Iraq Contractor Spills the Beans on KBR

For 3.5 years, from February 2006 to late May 2009 I was working in Iraq for KBR as a heavy truck driver. I started off at a southern Iraq fuel depot in 2006, eventually getting transferred to a nice coalition camp, and at last the Green Zone. My experience lies in the 200 + missions I was a part of.

Our schedule was hectic to say in the least. KBR schedules all of it’s employees on a 12/7 week. Yes, that’s twelve hours per day, seven days per week! Even the soldiers get time off there. One would think that for the people hauling jet fuel around Baghdad, that it may improve safety by giving us an occasional day off. For the general public that is clueless, KBR has the highest accident rates of any entity in the two wars we’re waging in that part of the world. It’s not hard to see why!

For every one expat from the west, I.E. US, UK, or AU, there are about five foreign nationals from places like India, Pakistan, Ghana and many other poor nations. These people were placed under our supervision. They are on the same schedule as us, yet make 1/10th the income. And bear in mind KBR is compensated for them at the same rate as us. Each driver brings KBR around $12,000 per month from the US government. So in a sense KBR is just an employment agency.

They do provide vacation time to the expats every 120 days. If this weren’t so on the schedule they go by, then there would no doubt be many more acts of violence against KBR security. An incident occured at Camp Liberty that I won’t go into detail about. But you get the idea.

The people who actually are responsible for getting anything done in Iraq is the soldiers who go on patrol, and the mostly civilian drivers who keep all the camps supplied with every thing needed to operate. Food, fuel, clothing, equipment, you name it they deliver it.

It can be dangerous there. I won’t candy coat anything and say it’s not. But everyone has their limits. You just have to know yours before trying such a job. KBR is definitely the most demanding employer there. Even more so perhaps than the military. I am including links for anyone who wishes to apply. It’s free, and if you’re wacked enough to go for it by all means have at it. They hire people from every country, so I just want to say “good-luck” if you go!
